Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park

Would you like to learn what life was like during the reign of the Timucua tribes? Or how about get up close and personal with the weaponry used during the Civil War? If these topics pique your interest, be sure to mark this event on your calendar! Cannons on the Plaza is an annual reenactment at Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park. This is the only Northeast Florida State Park event that commemorates over 18 centuries of American history with gun blasts and cannon bombs!

When you walk onto the scene, you’ll be blown away by the warm greetings from the park ranger staff, and as you begin your tour of the plaza, you’ll find each era of history come to life in reenactors’ sultry and conversation. Hop over to the Timucua tent to learn about the Native American’s struggle to keep their land in spite of French, British, and Spanish conquistadors.

Then, be sure to stroll under the neighboring tent, where a dozen reenactors provide extensive Civil War monologues. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! You will be surprised at how dedicated the reenactors are to their roles, and they will not break out of character. They have researched and rehearsed the preparations for this event, so that the lessons are thorough and the demonstrations are seamless, offering visitors an insiders’ glimpse into the various lifestyles, techniques, and drills used during these eras.

You might get sidetracked digesting the educational kiosks, but listen for the announcements of upcoming weaponry demonstrations, as they take place frequently throughout the event. Expect loud gunshots or cannon blasts about every 30 minutes, and have your camera ready!

If you want a more personalized experience at the Cannons on the Plaza, take time to chat with the reenactors and park rangers on site. They are knowledgeable and eager to discuss the history of Fernandina Plaza, as well as provide details on upcoming programs at nearby Fort Clinch State Park. If you need a break from the action, you can take a five minute drive down to Old Town Fernandina, where there are blocks of restaurants and shops along the harbor. Visitors will come away from this reenactment event having heard, felt, and experienced the realities of all time periods, including the hardships and stamina of our natives and the explosions of open gun fire across a scenic seaside plot of land.
