Park Overview

Little Talbot Island State Park stretches along one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands in Florida. Located in north Jacksonville, this park features 6.5 miles of hiking/biking trails and 5 miles of white sand beaches. The Timucuan Trail, a 6.5-mile, paved multi-use trail, travels along the park and is a scenic segment of the national East Coast Greenway Trail that runs from Florida to Maine.

Just north of Little Talbot Island is Big Talbot Island State Park, where Boneyard Beach is a popular tourist destination.

Our Adventure - Dune Ridge Trail

A black hawk soars overhead as we embark on the 4-mile Dune Ridge Trail loop. The trail meanders through five distinct natural communities, including maritime hammock, scrubby flatwoods, beach dune, depression marsh, and sandy beaches. Years of wind-blown sand created large mounds of ancient dunes under a lush canopy of live oaks, southern magnolia, cedar, sparkleberry, and sabal palms for park-goers to explore. Scrub oak flatwoods and cabbage palm also remain from centuries ago.

Winding Dune Ridge Trail

As we begin our trek, the ground is cloaked in autumn-colored leaves, pine needles, and pinecones fallen from towering pines alongside the trail. Green moss trickles down wide oak roots and barren cedar trees have exposed bright red stumps. Along our hike, birds flutter about the understory, a black snake slithers at our boots, and miniature acorns sprinkle across the carved road. The trail twists and turns around deep valleys of oak forests whose thick branches interconnect over the pathway. Sunlight trickles down through spider-like, white moss spotted branches and entangled vines, and we hike uphill, gazing down into the abyss where tumbling leaves are carried in the wind.

Sand Dunes

Along the way, you can relax on a bench if the grades and cross slopes become burdensome. Erosion has made for a more arduous endeavor, and just after the 1.5-mile marker, the trail widens again with white sands and wild needle brush surrounding. The ocean roars louder as we approach the beach, passing two officially designated dune restoration areas. The coastal dunes are lined with sea oats and railroad vines. The wind picks up and we trek the dense, white sand along the shoreline with millions of multi-color shells providing pops of vibrancy in a bleak scene. Be sure to pick up a shell and sharks’ teeth handout, free at the Ranger Station!

Driftwood at Little Talbot Island

The 5-mile-long barrier island is serene. Only footprints remain in the sand. Rough waves tumble onshore, and the wind blows fierce as we select a solid stump for a brief pause. The sun delivers a soothing warmth of solace on a breezy winter afternoon. Deep blue waters in the flat horizon appear endless and desolate with a single sailboat bobbing and weaving, fighting to stay steady in the violent winds. Flocks of migratory birds pass overhead and piping plovers nibble on the shoreline in this ever-changing landscape.
